Philip van Allen’s article present’s the history of interaction pointing out its progression, mentioning where designers had failed or succeeded. He also compares different forms of interaction. I believe that now that we live in an era of facilitated communication where we have access to computers, to the Internet, and consequently to an incredible amount of stored information, we search for something more, we want the technology to evolve. Something we search for is interaction; interaction with the environment, with the media, with softwares. Interaction’s efficiency has even been proved in a learning context. Philip van Allen understood the importance of interaction and developed what I believe to be a brilliant theory: Productive Interaction. In few words, Allen promotes the idea of engaging the viewer in an interaction with the medium used in the design. For instance, a website should be constructed in a way that implicates the viewer, it should challenge him, put him in the “driver’s” place. I believe this theory should be integrated to every project that aims at a good communication with the public.
